Most of your money moves on a schedule: salary arrives twice a month, rent goes out on the first, and streaming services renew on the same day each month. Instead of typing these in every time, you add them once on the Recurring page. Budget Planner then creates a payment for every due date, and you tick them off on the Payments page.
What you'll learn
- How to add a recurring income, bill, subscription, debt, or savings transfer
- How scheduled payments are created
- How to mark payments as paid, and why it matters
Part 1 — Add recurring transactions
Open Recurring from the Planning section of the sidebar. At the top you'll see your Monthly Income, Monthly Expenses, and Net Monthly. Weekly or yearly items are converted to a monthly figure so you can compare them. Below that, your recurring items are grouped by type: Income, Bills, Subscriptions, Debts, and Savings.
Add one
- Click New Transaction. A panel opens on the right.
- Enter a Transaction Name, for example "Netflix", "Rent", or "Salary".
- Pick the Transaction Type: Income, Bills, Subscriptions, Debts, or Savings.
- Enter the Amount.
- Choose the Repeat Frequency: from Weekly, Bi-Weekly, Every 4 Weeks, Semi-Monthly, and Monthly through to Quarterly, Semi-Annual, Annual, or One Time.
- Set the Start Date. Add an End Date (optional) if it stops, for example the last payment on a loan.
- Choose the Bank Account the money comes from or goes to.
- Click Create.
The optional fields work just like they do for transactions: Category (optional), Spender (or Earner for income), 50/30/20 Classification, and Description (optional).
For Debts and Savings, the account field becomes From Account, and a To Account field appears. For example, you can send a monthly amount from checking to your emergency fund. The two accounts must be different.
Put the category on every bill and subscription. That's what fills in the Budgeted column on your Monthly Budget page, so your plan builds itself.
Manage your recurring items
Each row shows the frequency, the account, the start date, and how many payments have been generated so far.
- Active switch — turn an item off when you pause something, such as a subscription you've cancelled. Turn it back on any time.
- Regenerate Payments (the circular arrows icon) — rebuilds the upcoming unpaid payments for that item. Payments you've already marked as paid stay as they are.
- Edit (pencil) — change the amount, date, or account. If you change the frequency or amount, the upcoming payments are updated for you.
- Bulk Edit — tick several rows to change their frequency, amount, account, or active status in one go, or Delete Selected to remove them.
Part 2 — Mark payments as paid
Open Payments from the Planning section. The page title reads Payment Calendar, and it lists every scheduled payment for the month. At the top you'll see the month's Total Amount, Paid, Unpaid, and Overdue totals.
When a bill goes out or your salary arrives, click the Status button on that row (Unpaid or Overdue). It switches to Paid. Click it again to undo.
To mark several at once, tick their boxes and click the Mark … Payments as Paid button that appears. It shows how many you've selected, for example Mark 3 Payments as Paid.
Marking a payment as paid is what moves money in your account balances. A bill that's still unpaid does not reduce your Current Balance on the Bank Accounts page.
Change a single payment
Sometimes one month is different, such as a higher electricity bill or a payment that slipped by a few days. These changes apply to that one payment only:
- Change the date — click the date in the Due Date column of an unpaid payment and pick a new day.
- Change the amount, account or spender — click the Edit Payment icon at the end of the row. You can also add a note in Description.
The original value stays visible as "Original: …" so you always know what changed.
Use the Status menu to show only paid or unpaid payments, and the arrows next to the month name to look at other months. Export CSV and Print / PDF download the list.
