A goal is made of two kinds of items that you add inside its detail panel:
- Steps are the actions you take. Ticking a step off moves your progress forward.
- Milestones are checkpoints with an optional date, such as "Portfolio v2 published". They help you see where you are on the way, but they do not change the progress percentage.
Both are added from the goal detail panel. Open a goal with Open plan first. See The goal detail panel.
Steps
What you see

5/10(completed out of total). - A circle on each row. An empty circle is an open step; a green check is a completed step.
- The step title. Completed steps are crossed out.
- A trash icon to delete the step.
- A drag handle on the left to change the order.
- The Add a step... field and the + button at the bottom.
How to add a step
- Click into Add a step....
- Type the step.
- Press Enter, or click the + button (Add Step).
How to tick a step off

Keep steps small enough to finish in a day or a week. A step such as "Build a 5-project case study portfolio" is a good goal-level item; "Write case study 3, part 2" is a better step.
Milestones
What you see
- The Milestones heading with a counter such as
1/4. - Each milestone's title, its optional description and a circle to tick it off.
- A date label. A date in the past shows Overdue; a future date shows how many days are left, such as 12d left.

1/4).
Steps vs milestones at a glance
| Steps | Milestones | |

| Count toward progress percentage | Yes | No |
| Can have a date | No | Yes (target date) |
| Shown on the dashboard | Only the next open step | Upcoming dated milestones |
FAQ
Milestones do not count toward the progress percentage. Only steps (and linked habits) do. See Tracking progress and completing goals.
The dashboard shows the first open step. If all steps are ticked, or the goal has none, the card asks you to add one.
The Target Date field is part of the form, but a milestone without a date still appears in the list. Only dated milestones appear under Upcoming Milestones on the dashboard.
