Creating and Editing Habits

Set a habit's frequency, tracking type, daily or monthly target, time of day and emoji, then pause, duplicate or delete it from My Habits.

Every habit in Habit Tracker is built from the same short form. The choices you make there decide how you check it off, what counts as "done", and where it shows up on your dashboard. This article walks through each field and then shows you how to manage your habits once they exist.

Open the habit form

Go to My Habits in the sidebar and click New Habit at the top right. You can also use the New Habit button on the Dashboard, which brings you to the same page. The New Habit form opens above your list.

The fields, one by one

Habit Name and Category

Give the habit a short, specific name, such as Read before bed rather than Reading. Category is required. It groups the habit on the My Habits page and gives it a filter on the Dashboard. New accounts come with a starter set of categories, and you can add your own on the Categories page (see below).

Frequency

OptionUse it for
DailySomething you aim to do every day
WeeklySomething you do once a week, such as a weekly review. Weekly habits get their own section on the Dashboard and the Tracker.
CustomSomething you do on some days but not all. You set how many days per month count as success.

Tracking Type

TypeHow you check it off
Yes/NoA single tick: done or not done. The only type you can tick straight from the Dashboard.
AmountYou log a number, such as 8 glasses or 20 pages.
TimerYou log minutes, such as 30 minutes of practice.
QuitFor something you want to stop doing. Tick each day you stayed away from it on the Tracker page.

When you pick Amount or Timer, two more fields appear:

  • Daily Target (or Daily Minutes for a timer) is how much counts as a full day. For a weekly habit the label changes to Weekly Target or Weekly Minutes.
  • Unit is what you're counting, such as pages, glasses or steps.

Underneath, a hint shows the rough monthly total, for example Monthly: ~600 pages.

Monthly Target

For Yes/No and Quit habits, or any habit with Custom frequency, you set a Monthly Target: how many days in the month you're aiming for (1–31). Choosing Daily fills in 30 for you, and Weekly fills in 4. You can type your own number at any time. This target drives the Goal, Left and % columns on the Tracker page.

Time of Day and Emoji

Time of Day (Morning, Afternoon, Evening or Anytime) doesn't set a reminder. It groups your habits so you can filter the Dashboard by part of the day. The Emoji appears next to the habit everywhere in the app, which makes long lists easier to scan.

Click Create to save, or Cancel to close the form without saving.

Use Amount when partial progress still matters. Logging 12 of 20 pages keeps an honest record of your effort, while a Yes/No habit can only say "done" or "not done".

Managing your habits

My Habits, filtered to one category. Each row has pause, edit, duplicate and delete buttons.

The My Habits page lists every habit, grouped by category. Use the category list on the left, the Search box, or the All / Active / Paused filters to find one quickly. Each row has four buttons:

  • Power: pause or resume. A paused habit keeps its history but disappears from the Dashboard, the Tracker and Analytics until you turn it back on. It shows as Paused in the list.
  • Pencil: edit. Opens the Edit Habit form. Clicking the habit's name does the same. Change what you need and click Save.
  • Duplicate. Makes a copy, which is handy for a similar habit with a different target.
  • Trash: delete. Asks you to confirm before removing the habit.

Deleting removes the habit from your tracker. If you might come back to it, pause it instead. Your past check-ins stay safe and your streak history is kept.

At the bottom of the page, Suggested Habits opens a short list of ideas based on your profile. Each idea shows a suggested frequency and time of day. To use one, create it yourself with New Habit.

Managing categories

Open Categories in the sidebar to add your own. Click New Category, then give it a Category Name, an Emoji and a Color. The color appears as the dot next to the category on the Dashboard and in My Habits.

Deleting a category also deletes all the habits in it and removes them from your tracker. Move habits to another category first (edit each habit and change its Category) if you want to keep them.

FAQ

Not per habit. Time of Day only groups and filters your habits. You can choose which Habit Tracker notifications you receive under Settings → Notifications.

The free plan allows up to 3 habits, and paused habits count too. Delete one you no longer need, or upgrade under Settings → Subscription.

No. Your check-ins stay. Changing the target does change how your progress and percentages are calculated, including for the current month.
