Labels are short coloured tags for your tasks, such as Urgent or Waiting for client. You manage them in two places: the Labels card in Settings, and the Labels tab of the task panel.
The hint on the Labels card says: "Tag tasks with labels from the task panel. Changes here are saved right away." Unlike the other Settings cards, you do not need to press Save for labels.
The Labels card
What you see
- A list of your labels. Each row has a coloured dot (press it to change the colour), the name in an editable box and a trash button (Delete label).
- "No labels yet." when the list is empty.
- At the bottom, a box that says "New label, e.g. Urgent", an Add button and ten colour swatches.
Create a label
- Open Settings (the gear icon in the sidebar footer) and scroll to Labels.
- Type a name in the box. It can be up to 50 characters.
- Choose a colour. The ten choices are sky blue, indigo, violet, pink, red, orange, amber, green, teal and slate. The first one is selected until you pick another.
- Press Add, or press Enter.
Two labels cannot have the same name. If you try, the page shows an error message and the second label is not created.
Rename a label
Click the name, type the new one, then press Enter or click outside the box. It saves at once. An empty name is ignored and the old name stays.
Change a label's colour
- Press the coloured dot next to the label (Change colour). A row of swatches opens under the label.
- Press the colour you want.
It saves right away and the row of swatches closes. The colour that is in use is outlined.
Delete a label
- Press the trash button (Delete label) on the row.
- Read the question Delete this label?. It says "“Name” will be removed from every task that uses it."
- Press Delete to confirm, or Cancel to keep the label.
Use labels on a task
- Open a task to see its task panel (see the task detail article).
- Press the Labels tab.
- Press a label to switch it on for this task. A check mark appears. Press it again to switch it off.
- To make a new label without leaving the task, use the box at the bottom of the tab. The new label is switched on for the task as soon as it is created.
If you have no labels yet, the tab says "No labels yet — create your first one below."
Labels belong to your own account, not to a single project. A label you create can be used on any of your tasks.
Keep label names short and use colours with a meaning, for example red for urgent and green for ready. You can change either later without touching your tasks.
