The Gantt Chart draws every task with a date as a bar on a timeline. You can see what overlaps, what is late, and which tasks wait for others.

Use it to plan the order of work and to move dates by dragging instead of typing. Open it from the sidebar: Views group, Gantt Chart (or press G then G).

The Gantt Chart: task names on the left, bars on a timeline on the right

Only tasks with a Start Date or a Due Date appear. If none do, you see No Tasks with Dates and the hint "Add start/due dates to your tasks to see them on the timeline."

What you see

  1. Toolbar. A Project dropdown (All Projects by default), three status buttons (Done, Late, Active), a Connect button, scroll arrows, Today, and zoom buttons. Extra buttons appear once you have links between tasks (see below).
  2. Search tasks... box. It matches task title, person and phase. The small X clears it.
  3. Task column on the left, headed Tasks with a count. Tasks are grouped by project (and by phase when a task has one). Click a group header to collapse or expand it.
  4. Timeline on the right with a bar for each task. The darker part of a bar shows its progress. Weekends and your holidays are shaded when you zoom in far enough.
  5. A line of help text: "Drag bar to move dates, right edge to extend duration".

Move around the timeline

The Connect, export, navigation and zoom buttons on their own
  • Use the left and right arrows to scroll.
  • Press Today to jump to today's date.
  • Use the zoom out and zoom in buttons to show more or fewer days.

Change dates by dragging

  1. Hover a bar and press the mouse button.
  2. Drag the body of the bar left or right to move both the start and due date by the same number of days.
  3. Drag the right edge to change only the due date and make the task longer or shorter.
  4. Release. The bar snaps to whole days and the new dates are saved.

If saving fails, the bar jumps back to where it was. Tasks in projects shared with you can be dragged only if you can edit them.

See a task's details

Click a bar (without dragging). A pop-up shows Progress, Start, Due, Status, Priority, Assigned To and Phase, whichever the task has. For tasks from a project shared with you, the usual Task Detail Panel opens instead.

Review date changes

The pop-up has a Review date changes section for moving a task and the tasks that depend on it.

  1. Pick a new Due date.
  2. Press Preview changes. You see each affected task with its old and new start and due dates. Dates use calendar days, so weekends and holidays are counted.
  3. If something blocks the change, a list explains why (for example Missing dates, Completed task would move or Conflicts with a preceding task). Fix those first.
  4. Press Apply reviewed changes.

A dependency says "task B cannot start until task A is done". On the chart it is an arrow from A to B.

  1. Press Connect. The button now says Click source....
  2. Click the bar of the task that comes first.
  3. The button says Click target.... Click the bar of the task that comes after.
  4. The link is created and Connect mode switches off.

To cancel half-way, press the Connect button again.

This page creates links. It does not have a button to remove one, so connect carefully.

When at least one link exists, more buttons appear:

  • A dependency arrows button hides or shows the arrows.
  • CP switches on the Critical Path. The chart highlights the longest chain of linked tasks in red and adds a Critical Path label to the legend. Project Manager finds the chain with the most tasks in a row, so it counts steps, not days.

Export

Press the export button (its name is Export as PNG). The chart is saved as an image called gantt-chart- followed by today's date.

Use the Project dropdown first, so the picture shows one project instead of everything.

FAQ

It has neither a Start Date nor a Due Date. Add one on Variable Tasks.

Done tasks are finished. Late tasks are past their due date and not done. Active tasks are not done and not late. Click a button to show only that group, and click again to show all.

From the Holidays & Days Off list in Settings.

Not by dragging. To shift dependent tasks too, use Review date changes in the task pop-up, preview the result, and apply it.
